Donor-first or mission-first?
What's your default?
Are you a donor-first or mission-first kind of fundraiser?
Most humans default to what feels comfortable under pressure… and that choice influences our tactics, our decisions, our confidence, and in the realm of fundraising… the funds you raise.
When it comes raising dollars most fundraisers prioritize the one who holds the cash - funders and donors - by default. This balances the perceived risk (ie. loss of funding).
This then pushes the mission to the background.
When pressure arises, people will unconsciously slip into different roles to appease, avoid or placate risk. It’s normal. Our nervous system is literally hard-wired to do so.
This is why fundraisers choose donor wishes over their mission every dang time.
Why do so many fundraising decisions default to what feels safest?
